Rick Ross Update Health Condition | Rapper Rick Ross reportedly hospitalized 2nd time. Rapper Rick Ross was reportedly hospitalized in Alabama after suffering two medical scares in six hours that required planes to be diverted.

The first scare came Friday afternoon as Ross was on a Delta Air Lines flight from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to Memphis, Tenn., where Ross was scheduled to appear at a University of Memphis basketball event that night. The plane returned to Florida after Ross suffered an unspecified medical problem. He was treated at a Fort Lauderdale hospital, and he even tweeted afterward: "Memphis here I come."

But after Ross hopped a Memphis-bound private jet, it made an unscheduled landing in Birmingham, Ala., because the 34-year-old singer experienced another medical problem, Memphis basketball coach Josh Pastner told a crowd at the Friday night event where Ross was to appear.

"On his way to Memphis," Pastner said, "he had to make another emergency landing, in Birmingham. He got really sick again, and they had to rush him to the emergency room."

WMC-TV in Memphis reported that Ross suffered a second medical seizure and had been hospitalized. The news station said the University of Alabama-Birmingham Hospital would not comment on his condition.

A hospital spokeswoman told The Associated Press that no one by Ross's name or his real name, William Leonard Roberts II, was listed as a patient. An emergency room representative, citing federal privacy laws, said she could not confirm the identity of anyone being treated there.

Birmingham airport spokeswoman Toni Bast confirmed to The Associated Press that a private plane traveling from Fort Lauderdale to Memphis made an unscheduled landing in Birmingham at around 5:30 p.m. because of a medical emergency, but she could not provide any further details.

Calls to Ross' publicist from the AP were not returned Friday.

Ross was scheduled to perform Friday night at the University of Memphis basketball team's midnight opening practice event, "Memphis Madness."

Authorities said Ross was on the Delta Air Lines flight when he suffered the first medical episode at around 1 p.m. The flight, carrying 121 passengers, returned to Fort Lauderdale.

Mike Jachles, a spokesman for Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue, said the flight landed at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and was met by paramedics. They performed what Jachles called "advanced life-support care," though it did not include CPR.

Jachles could not specify what exact care Ross was given, but he said the performer was stable, breathing, conscious and alert.

Ross was in a seat when paramedics reached him and he walked off the plane, Jachles said. He was taken to a terminal area where he was evaluated before being transported to the hospital to be checked out.

Jachles said there was a doctor on the plane who had tried to assist Ross, though he could not say what, if anything, the doctor did.

"Nobody told us, either when we were advised, dispatched or on the scene, no mention was made of CPR being initiated or in progress," Jachles said.

Soon after going to the hospital, Ross contacted Memphis officials to tell them he was still coming.

"He called a member of our staff and said not to believe what's out there and that he's on his way to perform at Memphis Madness," Lamar Chance, a university athletics department spokesman, said Friday afternoon.

"He called us," Pastner explained Friday evening. "We talked to him after the doctors cleared him. He said it was the altitude."

A video on his Twitter page Friday night showed a relaxed Ross talking from an airplane seat on the second flight and promising to appear as scheduled in Memphis.

The Miami-based gangsta rapper gained fame with his husky voice and lyrics that spotlighted the grimier side of Miami life. He has become one of rap's most popular figures in recent years.

Ross has a new album entitled "God Forgives, I Don't," due out in December. The hefty rapper's hits include "Aston Martin Music," ''B.M.F. (Blowing Money Fast)" and "Hustlin'."

The Johansson naked photos, apparently taken by the actress, were published on US gossip websites today after they appeared on the internet. There were reports also of a hacked picture of Justin Timberlake, taken by actress Mila Kunis.

"The FBI is investigating the person or groups responsible for a series of computer intrusions involving high-profile figures," said Laura Eimiller of the FBI's office in Los Angeles.

She would not name any of the alleged victims "due to the pending nature of our investigation," but it was thought there had been a recent rise in alleged hacking of stars, initially reported earlier this year.

The pictures of Johansson nude, star of Lost In Translation, the Girl with a Pearl Earring and the forthcoming The Avengers, showed her in a state of undress in a home setting.

In one she was holding a towel round herself with face to the camera, her unclothed rear view clearly visible in a mirror, while in the other she was topless. In the first picture she was photographing herself with a smartphone camera, and appeared to be doing so in the second, on a bed.

A publicist for Johansson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The TMZ website meanwhile reported that actress Mila Kunis had been hacked, and that pictures of Timberlake - with whom she starred in Friends with Benefits - had been leaked.

Two of the pictures show Timberlake, one shirtless in bed, another with a pair of pink panties on his head; another shows Kunis in a bathtub, and a fourth is explicit in nature, of an unidentified male, TMZ reported.

TMZ says the FBI has been involved in alleged nude celebrity photo hackings in the past year -- involving actors Vanessa Hudgens, Jessica Alba and more.

The FBI spokeswoman declined to say how exactly the celebrity victims may have been hacked.

"What traditionally was called computer intrusion can nowadays mean anything from ... compromise of a desktop, a laptop, an iPad, a phone or really any device with which one can access personal information via the Internet."

Such was the case for this Florida woman who was prancing around in her birthday suit outside her Miami home. You can't really make out the face of the unidentified nude lady - thank goodness for pixilation.

"It used to be you could contemplatively hold a water jug naked outside of your Liberty City house without fear that your photo would end up on the internet," Miami NewTimes reports. "Used to be. Bill Cooke, the blogging brain behind Random Pixels, chuckled a lot as he told us to Google the address and then click on 'street view.' When we checked again this morning at 9:45 a.m., the view of the woman's home is different from the picture above - she (and her nakedness) is no longer shown, she's been super-blurred. Even still, many news outlets like ABC News and Forbes already captured the original shot.

Ahead of the Sept. 12 pageant in Sao Paulo, Brazil, a few details have leaked out about Donald Trump's annual celebration of some of the world's most beautiful women. Like, Miss Colombia maybe has a penchant for not wearing underpants.

Twenty-two-year-old Catalina Robayo's miniskirts garnered more attention than usual when photographers documented what looked like a lack of garments beneath them. This week she was reprimanded by pageant organizers.

"Our supervisors talked to all of the contestants about dressing appropriately, and one of our p.r. people spoke to her, and apparently she said she was wearing underwear," Paula Shugart, president of the Miss Universe organization, told E! Online. "But regardless, it created quite a stir here for a few days."

Pageant officials refused to confirm whether or not Robayo was wearing underwear. But Colombia's brunette bombshell need not fear. Actress Vivica Fox, who will help judge this year's competition, offered advice on how Robayo, and any scandal-scarred contestant, for that matter, can rebound from a bout of bad, pre-pageant publicity.

"The first thing I would say is to breathe," she told ABCNews.com during a conference call with reporters Thursday. "Do not put so much pressure on yourself that you freeze up. Just be yourself, be likable."

Bravo executive vice president Andy Cohen, who's co-hosting the ceremonies, had more direct advice.

"She's coming into this with some people who maybe already have opinions about her but, you know, what she's got to do … she's got to be even stronger," he said. "She can't lose her confidence. She's really got to wow. And, she should probably wear undies."

Robayo's alleged ban on briefs hasn't been the pageant's only problem. Officials were forced to return bikini bottoms from sponsor Catalina Brasil Swimwear after they were deemed too skimpy for audiences. (What flies on the sands of Rio, unsurprisingly, raises issues on prime time network TV.)

It's far from the first time controversy's reigned at one of Trump's many pageants. Carrie Prejean memorably condemned gay marriage at the 2009 Miss USA pageant, posed for partially nude photos and later lost her crown due to breach of contract. Last year, the Miss USA organization came under fire after releasing racy portraits of the contestants clad in lingerie.

The headlines about Trump's latest pageant will no doubt woo more viewers to NBC's Monday broadcast. There's a silver lining for Robayo, too.

"If it doesn't work for her at Miss Universe, she could always go to Hollywood," said Shandi Finnessey, fashion commentator for the pageant. "It worked for Paris and Britney."

89 beauties from across the globe have arrived in Sao Paulo, Brazil to compete in Donald Trump's Miss Universe pageant on September 12. But amongst the contestants there has already been some controversy: Catalina Robayo, the reigning Miss Colombia, has scandalized the organization by making official appearances in mini skirts... sans underwear.

FOX News reported the story, quoting a source that said, "Colombia had to be spoken to and told she needed to wear underpants as what she was doing was totally inappropriate... People have been pretty upset by it; there have been photos and media appearances where she has completely had her crotch out."

Yikes. What, is the weather too hot in South America for undies?

It's actually not the first controversy Robayo's been involved in. According to Spanish sources, Robayo briefly earned a Miss Colombia 2009 title after the original winner, Diana Salgado, was forced to hand over her crown (whether it was a medical issue or a weight gain issue that caused Salgado to relinquish her crown is unclear).

Now Robayo has earned her own way to Miss Universe... but she may put her chances at risk.

President of the Miss Universe Organization Paula Shugart told FOX, "Our supervisors talked to all of the contestants about dressing appropriately, and one of our PR people spoke to [Robayo] and apparently she said she was wearing underwear. But regardless, it created quite a stir here for a few days."

Judge rejects Jackson doctor’s witnesses

To hear lawyers for Michael Jackson’s physician tell it, the pop star lived his last days in a state of physical and financial desperation. Hooked on Demerol and starved for sleep, he worried constantly about a comeback attempt that offered him one last chance to pay off his mountain of debt and reclaim a place in the music industry, the lawyers have said.

It’s a portrayal that attorneys for Dr. Conrad Murray say is vital to understanding what led to Jackson’s death, but after a series of court rulings Monday, it is unlikely to be heard by jurors at the doctor’s upcoming involuntary manslaughter trial.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor excluded the testimony of more than a dozen defense witnesses.

The defense had hoped the testimony of these Jackson confidants and other insiders would convince a jury that the singer was so drug-addled and experiencing so much pressure to perform that he accidentally overdosed on an anesthetic.

But the judge said these witnesses, some of whose accounts of Jackson’s drug use went back two decades, would confuse jurors.

“Discussions of these subject matters are sufficiently convoluted, distracting and detracting as to substantially outweigh any probative value whatsoever,” Pastor said.

This is unusual, Jones cancels concert

“Sex Bomb” singer Tom Jones was recovering in a Monaco hospital Sunday, saying “severe dehydration” forced him to cancel a concert in the glamorous principality.

The longtime star, famed for his swivel-hipped appeal and soulful voice, apologized to his fans on his website and emphatically denied British press reports that he had suffered a heart scare that forced him to cancel his Monaco concert Saturday night.

“There are NO heart problems, as has been reported in the press,” the singer’s website stated.

Jones, a 71-year-old Welshman who burst to international fame in 1964 with “It’s Not Unusual” and other hits, blamed his illness on a long successful tour “where many of the shows were in locations that were in the throes of high summer heat.”

Saturday’s canceled show was to have been the finale of his 3-month “Praise & Blame” tour.

A spokesman for the Princess Grace Hospital in Monaco told the Associated Press that Jones was admitted to the hospital Saturday night and was doing well Sunday. There was no word on when Jones would be released.

Jim Carrey launched his new website with a bang.

The 49-year-old actor posted a video love letter to “The Help” star Emma Stone on www.jimcarreytrulife.com last week that many online deemed “creepy.” The one-minute, 53-second video shows Carrey speaking into a handheld camera and sincerely professing his love for the 22-year-old actress.

Carrey says Stone is “all the way beautiful. Not just pretty, but smart, and kindhearted” and that “if I were a lot younger, I would marry you.” He goes on to say they would have “chubby little freckle-faced kids.”

The popular video crashed Carrey’s new site early Thursday. Carrey said on Twitter that the video “was a comedy routine.”

Stone has not responded publicly to the video.

Fleetwood Mac could tour, record again

Fleetwood Mac could be back on the road soon.

Lindsey Buckingham said the band is considering another tour and even recording a new album in the near future.

The guitarist, songwriter and producer says there have been “a lot of rumblings” about another Fleetwood Mac tour, but that nothing is on the books yet. Stevie Nicks also has hinted at future Fleetwood Mac concerts. The band reunited for an international tour in 2009.

Buckingham is set to begin a solo tour next month to support his sixth solo album, “Seeds We Sow,” which is set for release Sept. 6.

DAI director heading to Pennsylvania

The executive director of the Duluth Art Institute is leaving for a job at the University of Pennsylvania.

Samantha Gibb Roff will be director of development for the Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. She’s been with the Duluth Art Institute for nine years.

She said the position gives her the chance to be near family on the East Coast while advancing her career. But she’ll miss Duluth.

“I will miss this place — the great walking trails, the big lake, and the people I’ve grown close to — very much,” Gibb Roff said in a resignation announcement.

Christine King, president of the DAI’s board, wished Gibb Roff well.

“Samantha has done an excellent job moving the DAI forward giving our region an organization of which we can all be very proud,” King said.

Melissa Gilbert files for divorce

Court records show Melissa Gilbert has filed for divorce after 16 years of marriage to fellow actor Bruce Boxleitner.

The former “Little House on the Prairie” star cited irreconcilable differences in her divorce petition.

The filing states the couple separated in January, shortly after their 16th wedding anniversary.

Gilbert served two terms as president of the Screen Actor’s Guild, and Boxleitner has appeared in numerous movies and television series, including “Babylon 5” and both “Tron” films.

The couple has a 15-year-old son together.

Gilbert, who played Laura Ingalls on “Little House,” is seeking joint custody of their son and no spousal support from Boxleitner.

The change drew mixed reactions at the time. Dislike for the rule reached a simmer midway through this season.

That hatred has now boiled over.

The rule claimed the biggest scalp in track & field when world-record-holder Usain Bolt false-started in the 100m final and was disqualified at the World Championships in Daegu, raising further questions about the rule's viability.

With Bolt, the sport's unquestioned star, showing signs of vulnerability this season but flashes of brilliance in the early rounds, anticipation for this final was high. The race unfolded as most involving the 6-foot-5 Jamaican.

As the crowd began to cheer during runner introductions, Bolt mugged for the cameras, pointing toward American Walter Dix to his right, and teammate Yohan Blake to his left, playfully shaking his head before framing his own face with two hands. Yes, that's who they were cheering for.

Runners were called to the start, and Bolt yelled, "Let's go!" and pounded his chest before crouching into the blocks. You could tell he was more ready to run than at any point in the last two years.

In fact, he was too animated.

A few seconds later, Bolt's showboating turned to despair when he jumped the gun. He knew right away that he had made the biggest blunder of his career and pulled his shirt over his head, yelling in self-r anger before he was even shown a red card. After being led away from the track, he pounded the stadium wall with clenched fists and paced in disbelief.

Bolt could only watch helplessly as Blake won his first world title, Dix took silver, and 35-year-old Kim Collins of St. Kitts and Nevis won bronze in his ninth World Championship appearance.

Afterward, Bolt did not grant interviews in the mixed zone or do a press conference. While walking to his car, he told reporters in pursuit, "Looking for tears? Not going to happen. I'm OK."

But, as long as this rule is in place, the sport is not.

In just the last two days, we have now seen Bolt, as well as Olympic 400m champion Christine Ohuruogu and her British 100m teammate Dwain Chambers disqualified for false starts.

In truth, you could see this moment coming from miles away. If runners were jumping early out of the blocks in Diamond League and European circuit races, what was going to happen when the fastest runners in the world reached a high-stake and encountered this no-mercy rule?

In June, Universal Sports sprint analyst and four-time Olympic medalist predicted the likes of this disaster.

"Someone ‘big' will get thrown out of their Trials or at the Olympics. I would bet my house on it," he said. "We will see something like an Olympic semifinal, or some high tension race, combined with some starter who wants to put almost three seconds in between ‘set' and the gun. It's not about ‘IF,' it's about ‘WHEN.'"

Well, the when is now.

An entire sport cannot be rendered irrelevant by a singular rule. Having the biggest star - check that, a global icon - in a sport struggling for attention (it was hard to miss all the empty seats for the 100m final even before Bolt got thrown out) getting the heave-ho for what is, for all intents and purposes, a minor infraction is bad for business.

The one-false start rule was added basically for the benefit of television, providing insurance against long delays with multiple false starts. But do you think losing the likes of Bolt is good for ratings?

Even Dix was somewhat mystified by everything that unfolded, telling the Associated Press, "I didn't really think they were going to kick him out. How can you kick Usain out of the race?"

Whether it's Bolt, or Dix, or 280-pound American Samoan teenager Sogelau Tuvalu, no one should be disqualified for the first false start.

71-year-old, Dr Tony Tan, will take over from President SR Nathan at the end of this month when he retires.

Indian-origin Nathan has served two six-year terms.

Welcoming the results and election of Dr Tony Tan, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said "this is the first presidential election in 18 years. It is good that Singaporeans have had the chance to vote for their next President, and to focus on what the elected President is about. I thank the four candidates for putting themselves forward."

Dr Tony Tan, a former top ranking political executive of the ruling People's Action Party (PAP), won by a thin margin of 0.34%, or 7,269 votes against its rival, garnering 744,397 votes or 35.19% of the 2.15 million votes casts yesterday.

Tan Cheng Bock, 71 and a former PAP member of parliament, received 737,128 votes or 34.85% of the votes.

A former civil servant and now a financial investment advisor Tan Jee Say, 57, received 529,732 or 25.04% of the votes in the first ever four-corner presidential election campaign.

Tan Kin Lian, 63 and a former executive of an state insurance company, lost his deposit after receiving only 4.91% or 130,931 votes.

"Voters have chosen Dr Tony Tan as our Head of State, to represent us at home and abroad, and to exercise custodial powers, including over reserves and key appointments," said the Prime Minister in a statement this morning.

"Voters faced a difficult choice between Dr Tony Tan and Dr Tan Cheng Bock. This explains why the winning margin is so narrow, and why the winner only gained slightly more than one-third of the total votes. Nevertheless, under our first-past-the-post system, the election has produced an unambiguous winner, who has the mandate to be the next President," Lee said.

The presidential candidates and Singaporeans debated the importance of the President over the last nine days of campaigning after nominations were submitted on August 17.

The debate focused on the power of President and those of the Prime Minister, the Parliament as per the country's constitution, with the government and the four candidates explaining and reasoning on the role of the Head of State.

Internet media reported Singaporeans' views on the need to have a President with a wider check on the government, then the current power to safeguard the prosperous city state's past reserves, power to protect or reject critical appointments in the civil service as well as the final decision on certain laws of the land.

Dr Tony Tan comes with the experience of having served as minister with various portfolios, being the Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Chairman of Singapore's Government Investment Corporation.

However, he had retired from political office and resigned from the corporation to contest for the Presidency as mandatory requirement that the candidates should not be affiliated to any political party, and should have managed a corporation with assets of SGD100 million or served in an equal position in the government.

Polls opened island-wide at 8am at 781 stations located at schools, Community Centres and void decks.

The Elections Department said as at 5pm, 83.44 per cent of 2.27 million eligible voters have cast their votes.

Many voters were still making their way to the polling stations, half an hour before polling ended at 8pm.

At Hong Wen Primary School in Towner Road, some said they waited until the eleventh hour as they had to work in the day.

Others said they wanted to wait for the wet weather to clear.

A few said they felt it made more sense to vote later, to avoid the expected queues in the earlier part of the day.

Presidential candidate Tan Cheng Bock arrived on Saturday evening at a counting centre at South View Primary.

Dr Tan was walking around the counting centre, watching votes being counted.

He said he has about 600 counting agents across the centres.

Campaign insiders said almost 200 volunteers came forward to act as counting agents on Friday.

Presidential candidate Tan Jee Say, meanwhile, arrived with his wife at a counting centre at Singapore Chinese Girls' School.

Mr Tan said he is not nervous and was looking forward to a good result.

Mr Tan said tonight is different from polling night during the general election as this is on a national scale.

Meanwhile, presidential candidate Tony Tan is expected to turn up at Toa Payoh at 10.30pm to greet supporters and await the results.

Speaking to reporters, Dr Tan said this is an important day for Singapore and he is very proud to be a Singaporean.

Presidential candidate Tan Kin Lian said he plans to head for several counting centres on Saturday evening.

Speaking to reporters, Mr Tan said he feels quite relaxed waiting for the results of the Presidential Election.

He said whatever the outcome, it will still be a win for Singapore.

Mr Tan added this presidential race has created awareness about the Presidency.

New York City Evacuations After Hurricane Irene 2011

Evacuations began Friday in New York City with the sick and the elderly.

NYU Langone Medical Center and the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Manhattan, two campuses of Staten Island University Hospital, and Coney Island Hospital have moved hundreds of patients to higher ground.

Today, around 370,000 people in zones the city has labeled A (closest to the water) and in the Rockaways have been ordered to evacuate. It is the first time New York has ever evacuated its residents because of a hurricane.

"It is better to take precautions and get out of the storm. Mother nature is much stronger than all of us," said Mayor Michael Bloomberg in a press conference Friday.

The storm is expected to weaken as it travels up the eastern seaboard, and may be reduced to a tropical storm by the time it reaches New York.

Residents are advised to stay indoors regardless of the categorization, however, because the storm will still be strong enough to flood heavily populated areas of the city. With a storm surge expected to reach above 5 feet, Battery Park in southern Manhattan will be underwater.

The rest of the city may not have to evacuate, but they will be virtually stranded. At noon today, all subways, buses and trains around New York City -- the world's largest transit system -- will shut down.

Once winds reach 60 miles per hour, the beaches, bridges in and out of Manhattan and major highways will be closed. In New Jersey, Atlantic City is closing its casinos, and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie emphatically ordered everyone off the beach.

"Get the hell off the beach in Asbury Park and get out. You're done. You've maximized your tan. Get off the beach," said Christie.

Cancellations

The final round of the Barclay's golf tournament in New Jersey and Major League Baseball games scheduled in Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York have been canceled due to storm conditions.

Columbia University and New York University, two of New York City's largest private colleges, have moved their freshmen move-in day to Monday.

The shares fell as much as 7 percent in extended trading in the U.S. yesterday after the announcement. Jobs, who will become chairman, was on medical leave since Jan. 17, following a 2003 cancer diagnosis and a liver transplant in 2009. He is succeeded by Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook, 50, who has been running day-to-day operations.

“I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know,” Jobs, 56, said in a statement yesterday. “Unfortunately, that day has come.”

Under Jobs, Apple became the second-most valuable company in the world, after Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM), by introducing devices that revolutionized the computer, music and mobile phone industries. Jobs left Cook at the helm when he was on leave in the first half of 2009, and Cook built confidence with investors during that stint, when the shares gained about 70 percent.

“You can expect that it’s going to take a hit,” said Kenneth Polcari, a managing director at ICAP Corporates, in an interview with Bloomberg Television. “After it all settles down, people are going to realize that Apple is not a company that didn’t have a plan in place, that didn’t realize at some point this was going to happen.”

Apple dropped as low as $350 following the announcement, after rising $2.58 to $376.18 at 4 p.m. New York time on the Nasdaq Stock Market.
Jobs’s Legacy

As CEO, Jobs’s attention to detail and emphasis on sleek, easy-to-use products helped Apple repel competition from rivals as varied as Google Inc. and International Business Machines Corp. (IBM)

“He’s always going to be remembered, maybe for the next 100 years, as the greatest technology business leader of our time,” Steve Wozniak, who co-founded Apple with Jobs, said in an interview on “Bloomberg West.” “Company culture doesn’t change overnight. He’s got tens of thousands of employees. The quality of the products reflects how good they are, too.”

The day of the announcement, Jobs was in Apple’s Cupertino, California, office for the entire work day, and he attended a regularly scheduled board meeting, according to a person close to Jobs, who was not authorized to speak about the executive’s health. While Jobs has been housebound for the past few weeks and his condition is weak, the resignation was not indicative of a sudden worsening, this person said.
‘Extraordinary Vision’

Jobs told the board he intends to be an active chairman, and he held an emotional meeting with his executive team afterward, according to another person familiar with the matter.

“Steve’s extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world’s most innovative and valuable technology company,” Art Levinson, an Apple director, said in a statement on behalf of the board. “Steve has made countless contributions to Apple’s success, and he has attracted and inspired Apple’s immensely creative employees and world class executive team.”

Jobs was ousted by the board in 1985 amid differences over strategy. In his time away, Jobs ran movie animation studio Pixar, which he later sold to Walt Disney Co., as well as NeXT Software Inc., a company Apple acquired to return him to the company. Jobs is Disney’s largest shareholder, with a 7.4 percent stake. He will remain on the entertainment company’s board, a person with knowledge of the matter said.

When Jobs returned in 1997, Apple had run up $1.86 billion in losses over two years. It was 90 days away from bankruptcy, Jobs would later say.
Stock Surge

Apple stock surged 9,020 percent since July 29, 1997, the day before the San Francisco Chronicle broke news that Jobs would be interim CEO. Over that period, the market value rose to $348.7 billion from $2.06 billion.

Any slump in the shares may be short lived, said Daniel Genter, who oversees about $3.7 billion as president of Los Angeles-based RNC Genter Capital Management.

“Jobs has been a strong figure in the company historically, but he hasn’t been a driving force for the past two years,” said Genter. “It brings clarity. It shouldn’t have an effect on the overall market, but this market is so skittish so it may have a short-term negative impact.”
Transformation

Since his return, Jobs has led Apple’s transformation into a seller of everything from smartphones to music. He engineered the company’s comeback by honing Apple’s industrial design, tightly integrating software and hardware, and pushing into new markets.

The iPhone, introduced in 2007, has become Apple’s best- selling product and turned the company into the world’s biggest smartphone maker. After winning customers away from Research In Motion Ltd. and Nokia Oyj, Apple is now sparring with Google for leadership in the market for mobile-phone software.

“Under Steve’s leadership Apple has not only revolutionized the computer industry but also transformed how the world communicates, plays, shops and works,” said Frank Quattrone, CEO of Qatalyst Partners LLP, a Silicon Valley investment bank. “In the entrepreneur hall of fame, he is the charter member. He is, and will remain, an inspiration to the world.”

Cook joined Apple in 1998. As operating chief, his oversight included sales, manufacturing and distribution.

“The world will see in the next several years that Tim is a very uniquely gifted guy and Apple will be wildly successful under his leadership,” said John Connors, a venture capitalist at Ignition Partners, who serves on the Nike Inc. board with Cook.

HP Touchpad Sales Price 2011 | HP TouchPad Fire Sales Begin, $99 for 16GB. If you told me last week that I'd be buying an HP TouchPad this evening, I probably wouldn't have believed you. But in the wake of the company's stunning decision to pull the plug on support for webOS devices, including the TouchPad, the fire sales have started and I nabbed a 32GB version for $149. Details about where and when the official sales begin are still a bit sketchy, but I followed these instructions to find a $149 32GB device on HP's Web site. The 16GB, which some were purchasing for $99 earlier in the night, are apparently out of stock on the company's Web site.

Various tech blogs around the Web are pointing to a PreCentral post that is currently down, but it appears that the discounts first went live in Canada at Best Buy, Future Shop, The Source, London Drugs, and Staples. Indeed, the Canadian Best Buy site lists the 16GB HP TouchPad for $99. Future Shop also has it listed, but says it's unavailable.

According to Daily Tech, however, PreCentral posted a memo that HP reportedly sent to its affiliates. "HP will be lowering the price of the TouchPad beginning Saturday 8/20/11. This is the lowest price ever for the TouchPad so please post it as soon as it goes live. 16GB TouchPad- $99; 32GB TouchPad - $149," the note reads.

No mention of when on Saturday the deals might start in the U.S., but Best Buy is apparently sitting on a huge supply of TouchPads, so they might have a few in stock. At this point, the U.S. versions of the Amazon and Best Buy Web sites list the old prices; $499 for 16GB or $599 for 32GB. If the hysteria from the tech press on Twitter this evening was any indication, people are going to snap these up quickly, so grab one while you can.

Why would you buy a TouchPad? The device has received largely positive reviews, with the main drawback being the lack of apps. That's not likely to improve with the TouchPad's demise, but if you just want a tablet for browsing the Web, it's not a bad deal.

Tsunami (TOKYO) — The 2:36 p.m. (0536 GMT) quake was centered about 185 miles (300 kilometers) northeast of Tokyo and at a depth of 12 miles (20 kilometers), slightly south of where the magnitude-9.0 temblor struck March 11, Japan's Meteorological Agency said. The agency issued a tsunami advisory, predicting waves of 20 inches (50 centimeters) along the coast of Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures, where a nuclear plant crippled by March's quake-spawned tsunami is located. The agency lifted the advisory about 30 minutes later.

There were no abnormalities in key equipment at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant, said Chie Hosoda, an official with Tokyo Electric Power Co., the plant's operator. She said some of the plant's workers assigned to the coastal side of the facility temporarily retreated inside the building.

This was the first sizeable quake in the area in over a month. In the weeks following the huge March quake, Japan was frequently rocked by aftershocks, including several stronger than magnitude 7.0. Their frequency and size have declined considerably.

In Onagawa, about 210 miles (340 kilometers) north of Tokyo, town official Hironori Suzuki said there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. There was no visible swelling of the ocean, he said.

"It was a rather big one, perhaps it was because we are still in a makeshift office," Suzuki told public broadcaster NHK. Suzuki said the town has urged all residents via community broadcast to stay away from the coast and evacuate to higher ground.

The quake caused buildings in Tokyo to sway. Bullet trains and several other local train services in the region were temporarily suspended for safety checks.

Just over 20,000 people died or disappeared across Japan's northeastern coastline after the March earthquake and tsunami. Some 100,000 others were forced to evacuate their homes because of the threat of radiation from the crippled Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant.

March's tsunami destroyed cooling systems at that plant, sending its reactors to core meltdowns that caused massive amount of radiation to leak out of the complex. The radiation leaking has since dramatically declined.

The government has since ordered nuclear plant operators to take additional safety measures in case of a major quake and tsunami.

Self-described trouble maker Christine O'Donnell appeared on the Piers Morgan Tonight show on Wednesday, trying to talk about her book, "Trouble Maker: Let's Do What It Takes to Make America Great Again."

O'Donnell, a tea party favorite, is best known in Delaware for defeating the heavily favored nine-term Congressman and former governor Michael Castle in the state's September 2010 Republican Senate primary. She lost in the general election to Democrat Chris Coons.

Outside of Delaware, she is perhaps most famous for her claim to have once "dabbled into witchcraft," and her subsequent ad in which she disclaimed possessing supernatural abilities.

Before coming on Morgan's show, she had already told Good Morning America that she regretted the "I'm not a witch" campaign ad. She said experts told her to do the ad, but that she has since learned to "trust your gut."

The trouble started when Morgan asked O'Donnell about a part of her book that discussed gay marriage. That's when O'Donnell accused him of "borderline being a little bit rude."

O'Donnell repeatedly urged Morgan to drop the topic of gay rights, but Morgan would not back down, asking another question about the Pentagon's repeal of its "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

Morgan at one point looked as though he was trying to hold back a smile, and insisted, "I think I'm being rather charming and respectful."

O'Donnell said the gay marriage issue is not relevant or what she is championing, saying the book is meant to inspire the tea party movement to "bring America back to the second American revolution."

O'Donnell began looking off camera while asserting that Morgan should only ask her what she told him she wanted to talk about. At that point O'Donnell claimed she was being pulled away, as a handler tried to block the camera.

Morgan, for his part, didn't look particularly invested or bothered when he asked, "Where are you going? You're leaving?"

As O'Donnell removed her microphone she asked Morgan if he'd read the book, to which he said, "Yes, but these issues are in your book. That's my point. You do talk about them."

Then O'Donnell ended the interview.

The shoot could boost local economy by more than £2m, according to Glasgow City Council.

In the film, based Max Brooks' 2006 novel World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War, Pitt plays a worker at the United Nations Post-war Commission, collecting the stories and experiences of those who have survived a zombie attack.

Filming has already taken place in Valletta in Malta and in Falmouth in Cornwall.

World War Z is due to be released next year.

The Perseid meteor shower is often the most dazzling meteor shower of the year, but a fluke of timing put the peak of this year's space rock light show in competition with the August full moon. But accounts from skywatchers suggest the Perseids did not disappoint, despite the moon's interference.

In Woking, Surrey, in England, skywatcher and photographer Carolyne Jackson waited patiently in her backyard, camera at the ready, for a break in the clouds in order spot a meteor

The Perseid meteor shower has been observed by skywatchers for at least 2,000 years, according to NASA. The meteors are actually pieces of the comet Swift-Tuttle, which orbits the sun once every 133 years. The meteor shower gets its name Perseid from its origin point in the night sky: the constellation Perseus. Perseid Meteor Shower 2011 - NASA's all-sky camera in Tullahoma, Tenn.

Every August, Earth flies through the comet's cloud of debris and the tiny bits of Swift-Tuttle (most of them more than 1,000 years old) burn up in the atmosphere as they streak at nearly 133,200 mph. It was great to see God's amazing creations."

Just outside New York City, in West Orange, New Jersey, two dazzling fireballs marked the highlight of the Perseid meteor shower, as seen by this reporter.

NASA held an online skywatching party for the Perseids, providing a live camera view where meteors streaked across the frame of an all-sky camera at the agency's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. NASA astronomer Bill Cooke and his fellow meteor scientists Danielle Moser and Rhiannon Blaauw hosted a webchat for the Perseids to answer questions from what seemed to be a throng of eager skywatchers online.

In addition to the Perseids and the nearly full moon of August, and is known as the Full Sturgeon moon among other names, the International Space Station also made an appearance in the Friday night sky.

Cooke snapped an eye-catching photo of the space station streaking over Huntsville using one of the Perseid all-sky cameras and posted it on Twitter, where he posts updates as @MeteorScientist.

"ISS pass over Huntsville at 9 tonight," Cooke wrote. The space station is making a series of passes over the United States this week. Here are some tips to spot the space station in the night sky.

With 14,000 police officers now said to be on duty in London, many of whom are being drafted in from outside the capital, the Metropolitan police require these resources elsewhere with a continuation of the disorder a distinct possibility. A gathering of thousands of football fans who would have been drinking alcohol plus Wembley's north London location could have provided a flashpoint for further lawlessness.

It is unclear at the moment if Ghana's friendly against Nigeria at Vicarage Road in Watford, which is just north of London, will still be played. West Ham United, Charlton Athletic and Crystal Palace have postponed their respective home Carling Cup ties with Aldershot Town, Reading and Crawley Town, while Bristol City against Swindon Town is also off.

Meanwhile England's cricketers are preparing as scheduled for the start of the third Test, despite the public disorder in Birmingham. Both England and India's players remained in their city-centre hotels last night once it became clear gangs of looters were making large parts of the surrounding areas no-go zones.

An England and Wales Cricket Board spokesman confirmed during practice at Edgbaston on Tuesday that there is no reason to suspect the disturbances have put the match in jeopardy. "Everything is as normal at this stage. We will continue on that basis unless we are told anything different," he said.

Warwickshire also issued a statement this morning, making it clear they expect the match, which has attracted near record ticket sales, to go ahead as planned.

It read: "Warwickshire County Cricket Club wishes to respond to the media inquiries it has received by confirming that the third Test match between England and India at Edgbaston will proceed as planned, and play will begin tomorrow at 11am as scheduled. If there are any changes to plans, a further announcement will be made."

Only the England captain Andrew Strauss and vice-captain Alastair Cook ventured out last night, having been invited to a barbecue by Jonathan Trott, who is out of the match with a shoulder injury but lives nearby.

They returned safely. Their team-mates tweeted about the violence from their hotel, and James Anderson added this morning: "Awful scenes around the country. Saw it first hand in Birmingham last night. Great to see people coming together to help with the clean up." He and his team-mates appeared at ease as they arrived for practice this morning.

The upsurge in violence came as International Olympic Committee delegates from nearly 200 countries flew into London to discuss preparations for next year's Games and to attend three test events – badminton, beach volleyball and sailing. These will still go ahead as planned.

The British Olympic Association's director of communications, Darryl Seibel, meanwhile, has claimed that the trouble will not affect preparations for the Olympics – and might even heal some of the wounds caused by the violence. "It makes an Olympic Games and a Paralympic Games all the more important," he said. "We need a reason to come together. What better city to do it in than London. It is the only city to be honoured with the Olympic Games on three occasions."

Seibel also expressed confidence in the ability of the authorities to make sure next summer's event is safe. "We know the level of work and we know the level of planning that has gone into it," he added. "This is a reflection of the world we live in today. This is not a reflection of London, this is a reflection of the world we live in today."

Asked if he knew of any damage caused to Olympic venues, he said: "I'm not aware of it, no."

2011 London Riots News Latest Update | London riots: Police use armoured vehicles to clear streets. Armoured vehicles have been brought in to clear the streets of London for the first time by police to tackle what senior officers say is the worst rioting and looting in living memory. More than 6,000 officers – including 2,500 mostly public order trained officers and 3,500 local officers – were on duty as violence spread from north, to east, west and south London on Monday night. Fires burned in Croydon, Clapham Junction and Hackney and there were disturbances outside the capital in Liverpool, Birmingham and Bristol.

Senior officers say the violence and looting on Monday night was the worst in living memory; eclipsing the 1980s inner city riots in Toxteth, Brixton and Tottenham at the height of Margaret Thatcher's premiership.

Armoured vehicles – known as Jankels – were brought in during the early hours of Tuesday morning in Clapham Junction where much of the worst looting and arson took place. The vehicles were driven on to Lavender Hill to push back a crowd of 150 looters who had smashed up Debenhams and other stores and businesses in the area. Jankels were also out in Hackney.

Their deployment brought echoes of Northern Ireland during the Troubles to the streets of the capital and marked the start of what sources say are much tougher tactics against rioters. But a police source said the use of water cannon was a decision for government, not Scotland Yard.

The use of armoured vehicles to clear rioters after hours in which it appeared the police had lost control of the streets means they will be used again if violence continues, the Yard said.

Across London, officers were fully stretched and members of the public were injured as bottles, petrol bombs and other missiles flew.

One man in his 60s received life-threatening head injuries. Three people were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a police officer was knocked down by a car running into him in Brent, north-west London.

The Met received more than 20,000 999 calls, four times the normal number.

All police cells in London are full and anyone arrested now is being taken to surrounding areas, Scotland Yard said.

A spokesman said: "A significant number of arrests were made overnight, leading to all our cells being full and prisoners being taken to surrounding forces."

London ambulance service said it took 22 people to hospital from the main areas of the disturbances, although others were treated at the scene or made their own way to accident and emergency departments across the capital.

Police faced severe criticism as it appeared they had lost control in some areas on Monday night. In Clapham Junction witnesses were reported saying, where are the police?

But faced with criticism that not enough officers were on the streets, the Met defended its operation, saying there were 2,500 public order officers in addition to 3,500 officers in boroughs who were on duty.

The Yard brought in help from 12 other police forces and will do so again on Tuesday.

"Officers and staff continue to work long hours at short notice in very challenging circumstances," Scotland Yard said. "We continue to have the plans and resources in place to respond to any further disorder, deal with normal policing across the city and keep Londoners safe."

The acting Met commissioner, Tim Godwin, has called for all specials to report for duty and asks employers to support his request.

Around 13 000 officers will be on duty over the next 24 hours, the Met said.

PC Paul Deller told BBC Radio 4 that the officers gave it everything. Asked whether there were enough police on the ground he said: "Probably there aren't but we gave it everything we could."

More than 200 people were arrested, bringing the total number of arrests over the last three days of disturbances to 450. Sixty-nine people have been charged and officers from homicide and serious crime command worked through the night to examine CCTV images. Those arrested are being taken to police stations outside the capital because cells in London are full.

Scotland Yard said "disturbing" levels of violence were directed at police again on Monday night. Forty-four officers were injured, including one who will need surgery after being hit in the eye.

They did not believe that the American public would buy a program that featured an American girl married to Cuban band leader. This theory was of course proven very wrong.

Concerns over the weak U.S. recovery and Europe's inability to tame its spreading debt crisis have turned an intense spotlight on the monthly non-farm payrolls report.

"The report is going to be very critical. One of the things that has been the largest headwind to economic growth has been the high unemployment rate," said Jason Ware, a senior research analyst at Albion Financial Group in Salt Lake City, Utah.

"If there isn't job growth, it crystallizes in a lot of people's minds that we are in fact in an environment where growth may be really difficult to come by."

U.S. stocks on Thursday suffered their worst sell-off in two years. European stocks slumped to a level not seen since after the financial crisis in mid-2009.

U.S. payrolls probably rose by 85,000, according to a Reuters survey, after a measly 18,000 gain in June. The unemployment rate is expected to hold steady at 9.2 percent.

Top policymakers at the Federal Reserve will sift through the report when they meet on Tuesday but are not expected to announce any new measures to support the sputtering recovery.

The U.S. central bank has cut interest rates to zero and spent $2.3 trillion on bonds. Policymakers have said they want to see how the economy fares before taking any further action.

July's anticipated jobs growth might not be sufficient to soothe jittery investors. June's rise was the smallest since September 2010 and followed a gain of just 25,000 in May.

The Labor Department will release the July employment report at 8:30 a.m. (1230 GMT)

GROWTH HAS STALLED

U.S. growth stalled in the first half of 2011, fanning fears of a new downturn. Gross domestic product grew at a 1.3 percent annual pace in the second quarter after a scant 0.4 percent rise in the first three months of the year.

Economists said the weakness did not explain the abrupt slowdown in hiring in May and June. Average private payroll growth in the two months skidded to 65,000. It had averaged 230,000 in March and April.

"There is an extremely elevated degree of anxiety that has dominated recently, both the corporate and the consumer sectors. This tends to aggravate what started initially as a moderate slowdown in economic activity in the spring," said Anthony Karydakis, chief economist at Commerzbank in New York.

A stand-off between Democrats and Republicans over raising the country's debt ceiling poisoned the atmosphere for employers and consumers. The economy's poor health has eroded President Barack Obama's popularity among Americans and could hurt his chances of reelection.

The borrowing limit was raised this week in a deal that relied on spending cuts. Economists estimate the budget cuts and expiring stimulus -- including a payroll tax cut and emergency unemployment benefits -- could subtract more than a percentage point from GDP growth next year.

PRIVATE HIRING TO STEP UP

All the gains in non-farm employment in July are expected to come from the private sector, where employment is seen rising 115,000 -- an acceleration from June's 57,000 increase.

Only a fraction of the more than 8 million jobs lost during the downturn have been recovered.

Government payrolls are expected to have dropped by about 30,000 in July, a ninth straight month of job losses. But there is a risk of a steeper decline after a government shutdown in Minnesota left thousands of state workers without paychecks during the survey period for July payrolls.

"Since the jobs recovery began in March last year government agencies have cut 410,000 jobs," said Patrick O'Keefe, head of economic research at J.H. Cohn in Roseland, New Jersey.

With looming budget cuts at the federal government level and state and local governments still tightening their belts, the burden of job creation falls on the private sector.

At an average of 145,000 private jobs a month, O'Keefe said it would take four years to return to the pre-recession employment level.

Within the private sector, most of the job gains are likely to be concentrated in the services sector. Temporary help -- a harbinger of permanent hiring -- will be closely watched after declining for three straight months.

Manufacturing payrolls are expected to add to June's 6,000 gain because of fewer auto plant shutdowns in July for annual retooling. Most auto manufacturers brought forward their plant shutdowns to deal with a shortage of parts from Japan after the March earthquake and tsunami.

The employment report is also expected to show the average work week unchanged at 34.4 hours and with average hourly earnings rising 0.2 percent after being flat in June.

And one of the main dudes in the film franchise – Bubba Smith, who played Hightower – has joined the choir invisible and left us all feeling really, really old.

Bubba (great name) was an American football star before finding fame in the movies, has died at the age of 66.

Bubba will be having a rather large coffin, coming in at an impressive 6ft 7in (or a whole 2 metres if you prefer). In his time as a football player, he won the ’71 Super Bowl with the Baltimore Colts before moving into acting.

While some will remember him in the defensive end of the Colts, Raiders or Oilers line-ups, the most of us will remember him as gentle giant, Moses Hightower.

Bubba started out with small gigs in shows like Wonder Woman, Taxi (greatest theme tune ever) and Charlie’s Angels before joining the recruits in the first Police Academy movie in 1984.

Hightower was a regular in the flicks, basically on-hand to be either too-big for cars, being a nice guy, wrestling animals or generally lifting up really heavy things which made people’s eyes continually pop-out in astonishment.

Basically, he was a cartoon hulk who did the same things over and over just like we all wanted.

Smith was found dead at his home in Los Angeles and the cause of death has not been confirmed. It isn’t suspicious so we don’t really need to know what happened.

Tony Tan, Tan Cheng Bock and Tan Kin Lian were formerly PAP members. But only Tony Tan, a long-time party stalwart, has received statements of support from government leaders including Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Analysts say voters may see election as a scorecard on the PAP's reform pledges, despite the presidency being theoretically non-partisan.

The ruling party scored in May's election its lowest vote share since Singapore's founding as a nation in 1965. Prime Minister Lee later pledged to review the government's policies and paternalistic leadership style.

Although the president "cannot effectively serve as a check and balance on the PAP government, a low margin of victory, or worst, an outright defeat for the PAP-backed candidate, will probably be perceived as a second important symbolic electoral setback for the PAP within a year," Citigroup economist Kit Wei Zheng said before the election was called.

Qualification requirements include previous experience in ministerial or top-tier civil service roles; heading a government agency or company with paid-up capital of at least S$100 million; or holding roles with similar seniority and responsibility.

Nominations will take place Aug. 17. Prospective candidates must apply for eligibility by Saturday. The list of eligible candidates is typically announced a few days before nomination day.

Incumbent President S.R. Nathan, elected unopposed in 1999 and 2005, will retire after completing his second six-year term on Aug. 31.

She said: "There isn't a name that stirs more love, more admiration, more respect. Thank you, Gabby."

Leaning on an aide and with her once-blonde hair cropped and brown, Giffords appeared strikingly different from when she was sworn in as a third-term congresswoman in January. Days after that, she narrowly escaped death in a shooting spree during a "Congress on Your Corner" gathering in the car park of a Tucson supermarket. Six people were killed; Jared Lee Loughner has been charged with the attack – in May was declared unfit for trial.

At the vote, Giffords was accompanied by her husband, Mark Kelly, an astronaut who announced his retirement from Nasa in June, citing his wife's medical needs.

Politicians of both parties paid tribute to Giffords's courage. "She is a model for the attitude that we should all have because she is tenacious and she is relentless in her love for America. You were missed and we're glad to have you back," said the Texas Republican Ted Poe.

The protesters who peacefully demand civil, political and economic rights from monarchical republics and deligitimised ruling elites? Or the states which, such as in Libya and Syria, find themselves literally in a "state of nature", rendering life for the citizen dangerous?

The Assads' 'Leviathan'

Hobbes comes to mind so naturally. More than any other, this English philosopher grasped the ins and outs of human passions and failings, which drive human beings to become their own worst enemies.

Right now, the Assads are in a similar state of affairs. And these affairs disqualify them from ruling over a state and a people, which they are butchering. If only Bashar Assad, who has now bared his political canines to all, had widened his search outside optometry to see the contractual world constructed by Hobbes. Had he done so, he would have learned that strong government does not mean flexing martial muscle.

The excessive use of force against Hama is not an expression of strong and rational government. It is illegal coercion that could one day land the ruling Assads and the top brass of their coercive apparatus in the International Criminal Court.

Hobbes' political theory focuses on the disorder and civil strife caused by unruly human passions, as he knew well from his study of the English Civil War.

Maher Assad's tanks are sinking an entire nation in a "state of nature", and that, for Hobbes, results in a "war of all against all". This is the risk facing the "Arab Spring" in Libya, Yemen, and of course, in our case here, Syria.

Syria: a regime in rebellion

Nearly 30 years after Hafez Assad, aided by his brother Rifa'at Assad (the butcher of Hama) who now enjoys asylum in the West, the younger Assad generation is tempting political fate by killing in the name of a "regime in rebellion".

The killing they are engaging in makes the state the rebel, the outlaw, the lawless, and the illegal side in this messy uprising, which from the onset, like in Libya, the Assads sought to militarise through hundreds of killings.

Throughout the "Arab Spring", the millions of protesters - no matter the dialects, geography, political specificity, or forms of protest - have been resoundingly declaring to the world they share with billions of fellow human beings one thing: "The regime is the rebel".

That is some declaration - the "mother of all declarations". Such a declaration claims the legitimacy of resisting the regime, persisting in such resistance, and if need be, as in Libya, bearing arms against it.

The Assads' "leviathan" has rendered life for the ordinary citizens living under a rebellious regime, to go back to the words of the brilliant Hobbes, "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short".

In fact, the rule of the Assads, who may now be left with little or no recourse to protection against the rage which will be spewed at them in the crowded mosques and public squares during the holy month of Ramadan, is in deep crisis. The Assad dynasty is finished and Bashar is its last "prince". Whatever legitimacy the Assads have so far derived from anti-Israeli resistance by proxy via Hizbullah and Hamas is also no more.

The killing campaign being waged at the moment against many cities and towns all over Syria, such as Hama and Deir ez-Zor, is meant to quell the protests before Ramadan. Ramadan draws crowds to mosques even more than the weekly Friday sermon, and at a time of uprisings, the last thing Maher Assad wants is for such space to become platforms for greater mobilisation against the dynasty.

Luckily for Syrians, the Assads cannot whimsically amend the lunar calendar (like they did to the constitution to hand over power from father to son in 2000) to postpone Ramadan.

Hama 'out of control'?

The sudden military escalation against Hama serves three objectives: to kill the momentum of the protests before Ramadan; to send a not-so-thinly-veiled threat to other cities about the consequences of endless protest; and to reclaim state control over cities, including in Kurdish areas such as Qamishli.

Some of these areas have been in full defiance for weeks, often under a state of siege, with the army guarding all entry points to them.

Hama remains a festering sore in state-society relations: this is the city where an Islamist uprising was quashed violently in the 1982, killing more than 20,000 people. This is the kind of material Hobbes marshals as evidence of how nasty life can be during civil war.

Hama's stand must be seen in this context: it, more anywhere else in Syria, declares the regime to be the rebel, not the peaceful civilian protesters. The marches are not calling only for the dismissal of the Assads, but calling to account an entire regime that nearly 30 years ago victimised almost every family in that city.

Maybe the Assads do not wish to be reminded. Bashar has had all of the time in the world to copy King Mohamed VI's path, and hold his own truth and reconciliation process.

No one was ever punished for Hama, but the regime blamed the Muslim Brotherhood for bearing arms and being the root cause of such a rebellion, leading to prosecution, persecution and exile. Hama is still licking its wounds from 1982, and today's killings add insult to injury. But it also adds to the wide sentiment of defiance for self-preservation.

Four layers of power share the blame for what happened in Hama: the Assads and the Ba'ath Party; the police and the military bureaucracies; the state bourgeoisie and the media; and the client clergy. They are also responsible for the counter-revolutionary dynamic throwing a spanner into the pistons of the human trains carrying millions all over Syria. These millions are protesting against exclusion, state violence, marginalisation, and dynastic and nepotistic practices.

The role of the economic elite in the counter-revolutionary trajectory observed of late is more subtle and thus more dangerous. It is a social stratum that remains the repository of political conservatism, and acts expediently. They live by bureaucratic authoritarianism, and should it die, they face an uncertain future where more rigorous audits and accounting for state wealth is undertaken.

The gentrification of the 'country bumpkins'

The coups of the 1950s and 1960s ruralised the Arab Middle East, bringing into the state officers largely of rural background. They promised republicanism, socialism, pan-Arabism, social welfare, and the liberation of Palestine. They have failed on all accounts.

Instead, the "country bumpkins", who occupied the state in putschist ways, have after 50 years or so in power become the new gentry. Power has been "gentrified". The soldiers of yesteryear have booked a seat in the business class. So today, power comes out of the barrel of a gun only when the new gentry's interests become jeopardised by protest and resistance.

In Syria, a story like this has unfolded. The state has been turned into a milking cow for the new gentry, whose power derives from the billions the state apportions to it. The gentrified officers and partners in power will defend those interests fiercely, and to the bitter end.

Back to Hobbes

Is it back to the "state of nature" for Syria? Not a good trajectory to follow for either Bashar or Syria.

For someone so adamant to retain the presidency, Bashar must consider what Hobbes has to say about the absence of legal and contractual political community under a state of nature: "... no society; and which is worst of all, continual fear, and danger of violent death”.

A regime cannot purge a society. That is the golden lesson of Egypt and Tunisia. Coercion will not do it.

This is one of numerous questions for President Bashar to ponder. If felicity is to be for the Syrian people to have and to hold, then Bashar can begin by purging his brother Maher, the top brass now implicated in more than 1,500 deaths, and by enabling civil society to flourish, which will help build a genuine democracy.

In Syria, regardless of how long the Assads stay in power, whether months or years, the future is no longer what it used to be.

The wedding will take place in Scotland’s Edinburgh church, followed with a reception in Holyroodhouse, the official residence of the Scottish monarch.

According to BBC, the couple will travel from their ceremony to the reception in horse-drawn carriages.

Phillips, 30, and Tindall, 32, have been dating for seven years after an introduction by Prince Harry, according to MSNBC. Although many of the wedding details have been made private, The Telegraph reported that Phillips has been heavily involved in the process.

James Sleater, of Cad & Dandy tailors in London, said Phillips “wears the trousers” in the relationship and has been hands-on in selecting the wardrobe for the big day.

"Behind every man, there is a story of a powerful woman," Sleater told The Telegraph. "Zara has been involved and helped select the clothes."

According to MSNBC, Philips is less involved in the royal family. Princess Anne, Phillip’s mother, said her daughter will not hold any official royal title.

"Zara Phillips is not technically a member of the royal family - she just happens to have a mother who is," Vickers said.

BBC and other news sources are already referring to the upcoming nuptials as “the other royal wedding.”

The football excitement is shared by SMG General Manager Allan Freeman, who oversees operations inside the Superdome and New Orleans Arena.

"Everybody in New Orleans is a Saints fan, of course, and we're very excited to hear the news that the lockout maybe concluded this evening," said Freeman.

SMG said its full-time employees and about 2,000 part-time, game-day staff would have been negatively impacted if the lockout continued into football season.

Knowing that NFL owners and players are closer to an agreement is energizing football fans.

"It was almost over three days ago, three weeks ago," said Saints fan Rock Galotti. "Get it over with. Let's play football."

Christy Alsandor spent the afternoon at The Black and Gold Shop with her nieces, shopping for the start of the Saints season.

"My dad has been a ticket holder for 30 years. We've all been on the edge of our seats," said Alsandor. "We're ready for the Saints to bring it on."

With the Saints first preseason game only three weeks away, the hope now in NOLA is that the players are ready.

"It is a fact that Kobe Bryant's managers have contacted us," coach Ergin Ataman said Thursday, a week after Besiktas signed New Jersey Nets point guard Deron Williams.

Ataman said Bryant was waiting for an offer from Besiktas. The club, however, said it would need a sponsor to be able to pay for Bryant's contract.

"Our board will evaluate that," Ataman said.

Bryant has won five NBA titles with the Lakers and is a 13-time NBA All Star.

Representatives other NBA players also have contacted Besiktas, Ataman said, without identifying any of them.

The Turkish League season starts in October 2011.

Besiktas signed Allen Iverson, the NBA's MVP in 2001, last year but his time in Turkey was cut short due to injury.

Another NBA player, New Jersey guard Sasha Vujacic, signed last week with Turkish club Anadolu Efes. The 27-year old Slovenian guard agreed to a one-year deal with an optional second year.

Nets draft pick Bojan Bogdanovic also signed with Fenerbahce of the Turkish League in June.

Orlando Magic star Dwight Howard, a five-time All-Star, has said he would consider playing in China or Europe if the NBA lockout doesn't end.

Talks between the NBA and the union broke down June 30, and the owners decided to impose the league's first lockout since the 1998-99 season was shortened to 50 games. Both sides say there are significant differences between their proposals, raising the possibility that all or part of next season could be canceled.

Bibee, a 28-year-old carpenter who grew up in Angels Camp, northwest of the park, had brought Amanda Lee, a visitor from Missouri, to the top of Vernal Fall on Tuesday — her first visit to Yosemite, but the latest of many for him.

They were standing behind a metal barricade, peering at the cascade. It is one of the most popular and beloved sites in the park.

It can also be deadly.

Bibee saw a man cross over the barricade. He was leaning over the 317-foot waterfall, holding a young girl, who was screaming in terror. People begged them to get back. "I'm yelling at him, 'You SOB, get over here!'" Bibee said. Eventually, the two returned to safety.

But then Bibee noticed that three other people had also crossed over, and were "taking pictures and being stupid."

And then, as he watched in horror, one of them, a young woman, slipped. In an instant, she was sliding away, carried toward the precipice as onlookers screamed.

"The woman goes first," Bibee said. "Then the older gentleman at that point falls in. I'm watching the two of them being swept away. I'm starting to jet for the edge. It's just instinct. But Amanda says, 'No, no, don't go!' Then there was another guy I hadn't seen. I didn't see him fall in.

"But he looks back, just as he's being swept over the edge. I knew then they were not going to make it. They're going over the waterfall."

The three were members of a group of 12 from a Central Valley church that had hiked to the top of the waterfall, said Yosemite spokesman Scott Gediman.

Ignoring posted signs and repeated warnings, they had climbed over the metal-bar barricade to get in the Merced River about 25 feet from the edge of the falls.

As Gediman recounted what happened, it was a chain reaction. First one person was swept away, then a second one tried to rescue that person and then a third tried to save the other two. All three were swept over the waterfall.

They were identified as Ramina Badal, 21, of Manteca; Homiz David, 22, of Modesto; and Ninos Yacoub, 27, of Turlock.

Witnesses immediately called rangers, and search-and-rescue teams canvassed the waters downstream Tuesday. They were back out at first light Wednesday to continue the search, but by late morning park officials said they believed the three were dead.

The accident brings the total number of water-related deaths in Yosemite this year to six, park officials said. Two hikers drowned in the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir on June 29, and a hiker slipped and fell into the Merced River on the Mist Trail on May 13.

Twelve people have gone over Vernal Fall in the past, park officials said. None survived.

Gediman said rangers were collecting statements and photographs from witnesses to try to piece together what happened, but "none of this will bring these people back."

The Mist Trail leading to Vernal Fall is one of the park's most popular, Gediman said, and about 1,500 make the trek to the top of the waterfall each day without incident. He insisted that the park provides sufficient warnings of the dangers, and that the spot is safe if visitors follow the rules. He said the guardrail took "some effort" to climb over.

In two hours of intense questioning broken only by a bizarre incident in which Mr. Murdoch was accosted with what appeared to be a foil pie plate filled with shaving cream, both he and his son James declared repeatedly that they had been shocked to discover something that has become increasingly apparent: that phone hacking and other illegal behaviour was endemic at their News of the World tabloid, which is now defunct. Even so, the Murdochs and Rebecca Brooks, a former editor at the paper who resigned from the News Corporation on Friday, only to be arrested on Sunday on suspicion of phone hacking and bribing the police, apologized again and again for the failures at their company.

"I would just like to say one sentence," Rupert Murdoch said, breaking at one point into a long answer by his son, the News Corporation's deputy chief operating officer. "This is the most humble day of my life." (Shocked, appalled and ashamed: Murdoch tells MPs)

But his humility did not extend to declaring that he was at fault or that he should step down from his company.

"I feel that people I trusted - I don't know who, on what level - have let me down, and I think they have behaved disgracefully, and it's for them to pay," he said. "And I think, frankly, that I'm the best person to see it through."

While the elder Mr. Murdoch has long had the reputation of being a hands-on manager, pressing for and savouring the scoops scored by the newspapers he had always felt were the soul of his media empire, he said in his testimony that in the case of The News of the World, he had no knowledge of the specifics of what was going on.

He did not know, for example, that his company had paid confidential out-of-court settlements of 600,000 pounds and 1 million pounds to two victims of phone hacking. Nor, he said, did he know that the company was paying the legal fees of Glenn Mulcaire, a private investigator under contract to The News of the World who was convicted in 2007 of hacking into the phones of staff members of the royal family.

James Murdoch said he had not known about paying Mr. Mulcaire's legal fees either, and was "as surprised as you are that some of these arrangements had been made."

The Murdochs shut down the tabloid last week in a futile effort to contain a crisis that has also claimed the careers of two high-ranking police officers and two top News Corporation officials, caused the company to withdraw a much-wanted $12 billion takeover bid of a broadcasting company, and led to the arrests of 10 former News of the World editors and reporters.

The hearings (Ms. Brooks appeared separately) provided a gripping spectacle of executives who once commanded unassailable political power enduring sustained questioning from lawmakers enjoying a newfound confidence.

There was Rupert Murdoch, looking every bit his age, appearing at times to lose his concentration and sometimes taking so long to answer questions that he seemed not to have heard them at all. There was James Murdoch, his 38-year-old heir apparent, sharp, engaged and seeming alarmed at the prospect that his father would lose his way, quick to leap in when the elder Mr. Murdoch wavered or appeared uncertain.

Mr. Murdoch's glamorous wife, Wendi Murdoch , 42, sat directly behind her husband in the visitors' section of the hearing room. At one point, a man suddenly rose from his seat and advanced on Rupert Murdoch, striking him with what appeared to be a pie tin filled with shaving cream, or possibly custard. That caused Mrs. Murdoch to rise from her chair and slug the attacker with a swift right swing.

The committee chairman, John Whittingdale, a Consevative member of Parliament, hastily declared a short recess.

The attacker was later identified in British news reports as Jonathan May-Bowles, a stand-up comedian. According to The Guardian, he was sending Twitter messages about the incident. "It is a far better thing that I do now than I have ever done before #splat," the attacker apparently wrote, in a homage to "A Tale of Two Cities," just before unleashing the foam.

He was escorted from the building in handcuffs.

Members of the committee tried their best to get the Murdochs to explain why the company had repeatedly claimed that phone hacking was limited to a single "rogue" reporter. The answer, James Murdoch said, was that he had received bad advice - from his own executives, from the police, from his lawyers, even from the Press Complaints Commission. All had told him, he said, that "there was no illegality," and he said he had no reason to doubt their word.

It was a matter of "deep frustration" and "real regret" that the facts had not emerged sooner, he said.

He added that in 2010, when the company became aware of potential new victims after a flurry of civil cases began bubbling through the courts, "the company immediately went to look at additional records" and turned over the new evidence to the police.

Rupert Murdoch said that as the head of a company with 53,000 employees around the world, he could not have been expected to follow every decision made at The News of the World or even at News International, the News Corporation's British newspaper division.

He said that he generally called the editor of The News of the World once a month to ask "what's doing?" He tends to call the editor of The Sunday Times "nearly every Saturday," he said, but "not to influence what he has to say."

He added: "If there's an editor I'm most in touch with, it's the editor of The Wall Street Journal, because we're in the same building."

Asked a series of questions about specific instances of wrongdoing by former News of the World reporters and editors (most of them since arrested), he looked blank and at a loss. When his son tried to come to his rescue, Tom Watson, a Labour member of Parliament and a persistent Murdoch critic, waved the younger Murdoch off.

"It's your father who's been in charge of corporate governance at News Corp.," he said. "I will come back to you in a moment."

Jim Sheridan , a Labour member of Parliament, tried to draw out Rupert Murdoch on his relationships with politicians. Why, asked Mr. Sheridan, when he was invited to Downing Street as Prime Minister David Cameron's second visitor after the 2009 general election, did Mr. Murdoch enter through the back door?

"I don't know - I just did what I was told," Mr. Murdoch said.

His son interjected: "I don't think my father had any knowledge of arrangements being made for his entrance or exit from any particular building," James Murdoch said.

After his apparent frailty early in the session, Rupert Murdoch seemed to gain a certain feistiness and combativeness as the hearing went on. He took the opportunity, for example, to make it clear that he had enjoyed a close relationship with former Prime Minister Gordon Brown as well as with Mr. Cameron.

"I had also been asked in the back door many times by Mr. Brown," he said.

Both Ms. Brooks and Rupert Murdoch spoke in favour of a free press without government restraint, even as both made it clear that they had suffered a bit at the rough hands of the press themselves in recent days. Ms. Brooks said, for example, that a number of stories making the rounds about her - that she goes riding with the prime minister, that she owns a horse with him, that they share a piece of property - were not true.

For his part, Mr. Murdoch said that he had not really meant to imply, in response to a question earlier in the month, that his main priority in the crisis was the preservation of Ms. Brooks's career. But, he was asked, didn't he point to her and say "that one" when asked the question?

He answered on Tuesday: "I walked outside my flat, and I had 20 microphones stuck in my face, and I don't remember what I said."

Maybe that's what happened Sunday in front of a sellout crowd of 48,817 in the final of the FIFA Women's World Cup.

It ended 1-1 after regulation, then 2-2 after overtime, then came down to a penalty-kick shootout, as did the Americans' quarterfinal victory against Brazil, which the U.S. team won to become an overnight sensation back home.

This time, the shootout went awry for the Americans, and the Japanese won 3-1.

It was a result that, for the U.S. team, was painful. It was an ending — the Americans coughed up a 1-0 lead with nine minutes left in regulation, a 2-1 lead with three minutes left in overtime — that was excruciating.

"I guess it's never over 'til it's over, and we know that more than anybody," U.S. defender Rachel Buehler said.

As disappointed as the U.S. players were, they felt that in some ways the result was quite fitting, given the nightmare the Japanese have lived through since the deadly earthquake and tsunami that struck in March.

"Maybe their country needed them to win more than our country needed us to win," U.S. star forward Abby Wambach said.

Midfielder Carli Lloyd, one of three U.S. players unable to make a penalty kick in the shootout, agreed with Wambach. "Deep down inside, I thought it was our destiny to win it," Lloyd said. "But maybe it was Japan's."

The Americans were vying to win the Women's World Cup for the third time, but the first since the legendary Mia Hamm-led 1999 team won in front of a 90,000-plus crowd at the Rose Bowl.

Instead, Japan, which never had been to a World Cup or Olympic final and never had beaten the U.S. women — they were 0-22-3, having been outscored 77-13 — is the 2011 World Cup champ.

If that seems shocking, it's just another indication that women's soccer has developed from just a handful of teams capable of winning a title in, say, 1999, to maybe a dozen legitimate contenders in 2011.

"Teams are catching up to us," U.S. defender Ali Krieger said. "We can see that."

Japanese goalkeeper Ayumi Kaihori, who made saves on penalty kicks by Shannon Boxx and Tobin Heath in the shootout, was named player of the match.

"We have some very good players on the team and this is why we have been able to win the final," Kaihori said. "I received excellent support from the other players and I want to emphasize this is a team effort. In the penalty shootout, I just had to believe in myself and I was very confident."

Sharp thinks the death threats against Anthony are shameless, and they make her sick. Referring to the outraged protestors as the "lynch mob from 'To Kill A Mockingbird," Sharp says people have no right to threaten Anthony's life as the justice system found her innocent.

Sharp does suggest that Anthony stay out of sight, like her client Woodward did when she was released. Sharp advises Anthony to not give media interviews and to take time to process all she's been through and to receive substantial counseling.

Anthony's post-prison plans are not known yet, but when Woodward was released, she spent five months as a guest in Sharp's home.

Gilligan, 44, a devotee of Westerns, leans forward at the center of three flat screens displaying the shot.

The scene seems unnerving enough. Set against a sandstorm in Albuquerque, where the series is shot, Pinkman (Aaron Paul) looks like a dead man — again. Since premiering in 2008, “Breaking Bad” has become a critical darling and found some unexpected fans. Cranston, who is a co-owner of Cinemas Palme d'Or in Palm Desert, became the first actor to win three straight best dramatic acting Emmys. Time magazine named it “TV's best thriller.”

Last year, the show averaged 2 million viewers a week. AMC's smash “Mad Men” averaged 2.5 million in its third year.

So what's Gilligan's plan for this season, which picks up where Season 3 ended: with a pistol an inch from an unarmed man's face?

Gilligan wants to get darker.

Good luck with that. In addition to collecting statuettes, “Bad” is pushing how much violence basic cable can get away with. Consider some of the show-enders last year: a man getting his brains blown out and two dealers being flattened by Walt White's putrid Pontiac Aztek.

How do you trump that?

“It's all about the heroes,” says Gilligan, a Richmond, Va., native who heard the term “breaking bad” from parents clucking that a kid was raising hell.

In “Bad,” “we want to make Walt White a truly bad guy. He's going from being a protagonist to an antagonist. We want to make people question who they're pulling for, and why.”

Then on June 25, Lopez, her mother and the children were spotted at Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif., going on the Dumbo ride and attracting large crowds of curious guests.

Citing "Mr. X," which provided the blog with part numbers of upcoming products, the site deduced that those numbers translated into the products the site expects.

"Apple will be releasing four new MacBook Air models. This includes two 11 inch models and two 13 inch models; both screen sizes will come in entry level and upgraded configurations," the report read.

The blog has been speculating on the release date for weeks, botching July 6th as the release date initially, but now predicting it could come as early as the 14th.

While Apple has remained tight-lipped, confirmed reports surrounding Apple's internal process indicates a change is coming soon.

Apple released the "gold master" of its PC operating system, Mac OS X Lion earlier this month, while also ramping up production of the new Macbook Air, a sign that a combination could be in store soon.

A "gold master" is computer parlance that indicates that no more changes will be made to the software, and that finished copy will enter of mature phases of production -- like licensing, documentation, and other post-coding processes.

PROLOGUE

"The night was rank with the smell of man."

Not a bad first sentence, George! We're once again North of the Wall for our prologue (GoT: "We should get back," Gared urged as the woods began to grown dark around them"; ASoS: "The day was grey and bitter cold, and the dogs would not take the scent."). And, through our new POV character Varomyr, we get some new info on the nuanced mechanics of skinchanging and wargs.

Eating people while inhabiting a wolf: totally cool. Eating people while human: not cool. Inhabiting another human's body is an abomination. Inhabiting cats is problematic, because cats are assholes. Dying while in an animal's body hurts, but doesn't kill you. Dying in your own body sends you to a "second life" (not this one). And in a sexual kink that furries can only dream of, Varamyr often inhabited the female wolf Sly as she was being mounted by the alpha male One Eye.

As in GoT and ASoS, the prologue ends with the arrival of the Others, who kill the woman Varomyr had briefly taken over. Varomyr, who sounds like a real dick, gets to become one with everything, which hardly seems fair. But hate the Game, don't hate the skinchanger.

TYRION

Tyrion! It's been what, eleven years?. He is drunk, heading toward points unknown, and emotionally all messed up about having killed his father and mistress. Our favorite noseless dwarf (can't wait to see the CGI on Peter Dinklage in a couple of years) is also obsessing about what Tywin Lannister said before receiving a crossbow bolt in the belly.

"Wherever whores go," his father had said. His last words, and what words they were.

Tyrion is understandably distressed about his patri/mistress-cide, and seems to be taking Tywin's throwaway "wherever" comment literally, asking just about everyone he meets if they know the answer to the riddle.

Except! Those weren't Tywin's last words at all. They were:

"You ... you are no ... no son of mine."

(Don't believe me? Go to Amazon and search inside the book. It's on page 1,073.)

Now, it's certainly interesting to the Freudian analysts among us that Tyrion has selectively chosen to remember his father's comments on Shea a moment before the Oedipal money shot. But maybe even more interesting, given GRRM's penchant for misleading paternity situations: What if Twyin was telling the truth?

PS: Tyrion's face-off with Illyrio (Hi, Illyrio!) over the mushrooms of death owes a debt to Princess Bride's battle of wits.

DAENERYS

Khaleesi is facing a Taliban-style insurgency in Meereen, and like the Americans in Vietnam, and just about every country that has ever tried to occupy Afghanistan, she is learning that good soldiers don't make good policemen. Dany is facing a murderous group of Ku Klux Klan–like former slavers called the Sons of the Harpy, who are terrorizing and murdering former slaves.

We get what must be the umpteenth "citizens petition the monarch" scene in these books, and okay, we get it, it's no fun meting out judgment, favors, punishments, and whatnot. People are greedy and ungrateful; your ass cheeks get sore. Apparently no one in Westeros or Slavers Bay has ever gotten around to inventing a small claims court, let alone the full-fledged Truth and Reconciliation Committee that Meereen clearly needs.

Whenever Daenerys has tried to do the right thing (see: Mirri Maz Duur), it has usually ended badly. Could her good intentions be just as destructive as Cersei's venality?

Still, I think we can all agree, there is nothing worse than realizing that one of your dragons has flambéed a little kid.

JON

Jon, like all of the surviving Stark kids, is having serious warg dreams through his direwolf. Does that mean that the Starks have some natural skinchanging talent in their DNA? Or was it that fateful discovery of the orphaned direwolves and the coming of Winter that triggered the ability?

The Night's Watch is in an uneasy alliance with King Stannis, who is really into protocol and following the rules and is basically the diametric opposite of his older brother. Paired with the spooky religious zealot / sorcerress Melisandre, the trio has the makings of a classic situation comedy: Stan, Mel, and Jon may not get along, but if they don't figure out how to be roommates, the realms of Man are totally screwed!

Seriously, though, Stannis is just the worst.

BRAN

More skinchanging! From where we started five books ago, there is definitely a noticeable increase in the amount of magic in the world. Bran is now slipping into Hodor (Hodor!), which makes Hodor whimper, which, okay, that is just about the dirtiest sentence I've ever written.

Bran, Summer, Hodor, Meera, and Jojen are being led by Coldhands the Friendly Wight to meet the three-eyed crow. Except Coldhands is not so friendly when he's using an army of crows to kill some men of the Night's Watch. Bran, in Summer's body, has no problem feasting on some manflesh.

So, Coldhands is almost pretty much certainly Benjen Stark, right? But that raises two questions: Why make such a fuss about it over the span of several books without just coming out and confirming it? And, more interestingly, why did Benjen get to be a friendly wight instead of the usual murderous kind? I think we need some more rules on wight-making, please.

TYRION II

It's not surprising that Illyrio has spirited Tyion out of Westeros, since we know he's been working with Varys. But now we finally get some expository background on the Eunuch and the Fat Man: They were a good cop–bad cop con man duo. They went legit when Illyrio married the Prince of Pentos's daughter, and Varys got talent-scouted by King Aerys. Their motives for restoring a Targaryen to the Iron Throne are ... ambiguous to say the least.

Illyrio: "I keep her hands in my bedchamber. Her hands that were so soft." Aw. Ew.

Tyrion, while stuffing himself on a cross-country coach ride with Illyrio to meet up with Griff the sellsword, has what seems to be a prophetic dream: He is fighting alongside Barristan and Bittersteel, the founder of the Golden Company of sellswords, as dragons fly overhead. He has two heads, both noseless. You just know that's going to be important later on.

THE MERCHANT'S MAN

It's a new POV that will have you scrambling for the Appendix. Please turn to House Martell: It's Prince Quentyn, who has been dispatched by his father, Doran Martell, to find Daenerys and marry her, thereby upholding a double secret marriage contract between Dorne and the Targarneys. Quentyn and his companions are stranded in Volantis with no way to get to Meereen.

Am I alone in groaning a little bit with the introduction of this new POV character? The Dorne chapters in AFFC weren't exactly page-turners, and Quentyn "I didn't ask for this" Martell seems like an early nominee for one of those chapters that I will be trudging through dutifully to get back to Jon, and Dany, and Tyrion.

It looks like the trio from Dorne will be signing up as sellswords. And that's all I have to say about that.

"She weighed a healthy 7lbs 10oz and arrived at 7.55 this morning, here in LA. Victoria is doing really well and her brothers are delighted to have a baby sister xx."

In my view, South Sudan although now one of the world's least developed states, will be able achieve considerable development and a good standard of living as the country is endowed with abundant natural resources.

Signs of hope and progress across all the capitals of the ten states of South Sudan are already visible to anyone who happened to be in the country before 2005.

This clearly shows how the South Sudanese themselves can develop their country better than the Arabs in the Republic of Sudan. But progress will only be attained with good governance in place.

Real challenges exist and may impede the development process, but if all are solved the country will undoubtedly emerge an economically and politically strong state, perhaps even stronger than its northern neighbour.

This Saturday, July 9, South Sudan will join the community of nations. Foreign dignitaries will converge on its capital, Juba, to watch the new country raise its flag and inaugurate its first president, Salva Kiir Mayardit.

For the more than eight million citizens of South Sudan, it will be a momentous and emotional day. In January, they voted in an historic referendum to separate from the rest of Sudan. They did so peacefully and that is a credit to both people in the north and south.

Yet nationhood has come at steep cost. A staggering number of lives have been lost and people displaced in a 21-year civil war that ended only in 2005. When the assembled presidents and prime ministers board their official planes to return home, the challenges that remain will be daunting indeed.

On the day of its birth, South Sudan will rank near the bottom of all recognised human development indices. The statistics are truly humbling. It has the world's highest maternal mortality rate. Estimates of illiteracy among the female population exceed 80%. More than half of its people must feed, clothe and shelter themselves on less than a dollar a day.

Critical issues of poverty, insecurity and lack of infrastructure must all be addressed by a relatively new government with little experience and only embryonic institutions.

Condolences began pouring in soon after news broke about her death.

President Barack Obama remembered the former first lady as a "powerful advocate for women's health and women's rights" and someone who "helped reduce the social stigma surrounding addiction." His predecessor, George W. Bush, added that "because of her leadership, many lives were saved."

Some of the many others offering praise and sympathy included Nancy Reagan (calling Ford "an inspiration), and former presidents George H. W. Bush (describing her as a "wonderful wife and mother, a great friend and a courageous first lady) and Jimmy Carter (saying she was "a close personal friend" and "a remarkable political spouse.")

Born Elizabeth Anne Bloomer in Chicago, she grew up in Grand Rapids. At the age of 21, five after her father had passed away, she moved to New York City to work as a dancer and model before. She returned to the Midwest two years later.

One year after divorcing William Warren after five years of marriage, she wed Gerald Ford -- a former star football player at the University of Michigan, decorated U.S. Navy veteran and budding Republican politician -- in 1948. That year, the woman now known as Betty Ford campaigned with her new husband on his successful campaign to become a U.S. congressman from Michigan. She gave birth to three sons and a daughter over the course of their 58-year marriage.

The family moved to Washington, where Gerald Ford served in the Capitol for 25 years prior to his being tapped in 1973 as then-President Richard Nixon's vice president in place of Spiro T. Agnew.

Just over 10 months later, Betty Ford became first lady when her husband was sworn in as the 38th president of the United States. Gerald Ford took office after Nixon resigned in the wake of his impeachment following the crisis and cover-up of the break-in at the Democratic National Committee's headquarters at the Watergate complex in Washington.

Betty Ford soon made headlines, holding press conferences and publicly discussing her diagnosis with breast cancer. The first lady talked about abortion, pre-marital sex and equal rights in an interview with CBS' "60 Minutes" in 1975 -- the same year Newsweek named her its "Woman of the Year." According to the Ford library and museum's website, her candidness initially drew some criticism, but in a short time, 75% of Americans approved of her in public opinion polls.

But in 1978, just over one year after leaving the White House after her husband lost his campaign to remain president, Ford made headlines of a different kind. She entered the Long Beach Naval Hospital to be treated for alcohol and prescription painkiller abuse.

That same year, she published the first of two autobiographies, entitled "The Times of My Life." Ford would go on to become a high-profile example of someone who battled substance abuse issues, as well as a tireless advocate for drug and alcohol treatment.

"My addiction was a combination of alcohol and the prescription drugs that ... both were a part of my life, but they did not become a problem until they overrode my common sense," Ford told CNN's Larry King in 2003. "I didn't know what was happening, I just knew that I felt great and the pain was gone."

Her work paid dividends in October 1982 when, along with Leonard Firestone, she opened the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, California. To this day, the center remains one of the most well-known and respected places nationwide for treatment of alcoholism and other drug dependencies.

Ford also fought to promote awareness and research on breast cancer, with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation eventually naming an award in her honor.

She earned numerous honors over her life, including a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1991 and the Congressional Gold Medal eight years later.

Gerald Ford died on December 26, 2006, at the couple's home in Rancho Mirage. He was 93.

Mamur bought the suit two years ago for about £50 but he has never worn it. He was keeping it for a special occasion, a time that he had dreamed of since the day nearly 50 years ago when, as a 10-year-old boy, he took up arms against the Arab government in Khartoum in the north. "I never believed that the moment of freedom would come," Mamur said this week, unzipping the bag to show off his suit, as well as the yellow tie and black shoes he picked to go with it. "But I wanted to be well dressed if it did."

The moment has now arrived. At around noon on Saturday in the swelter of Juba, a suited-up Mamur will be among tens of thousands of South Sudanese and foreign dignitaries, including the British foreign secretary, William Hague, and the UN secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, who will watch as the flag of Sudan is lowered. Then, a giant South Sudan flag, six metres by four metres, will be raised on a 32-metre electronically operated flagpole that was installed this week by Chinese contractors who claim it is the tallest on the continent.

Six years after the end of Africa's longest-running civil war – and one of its deadliest – its largest country will be officially split in two. The Arab-dominated north under President Omar al-Bashir will remain Sudan, only with much less territory and oil. The ethnically African, non-Muslim south, governed by the former rebel Salva Kiir, will become the 193rd country to join the United Nations – the Republic of South Sudan.

The excitement and anticipation here in the build-up to independence is hard to overstate, eclipsing even the joy that accompanied the January referendum that saw 99% of voters choose secession over unity. Every South Sudanese knows that the new state, among the least developed countries on earth, faces immense challenges. But those are challenges for Sunday, and thereafter. For now, for a people who have suffered so much, for so long, it's a time of celebration.

"This is the day we have all been waiting for," said Luka Loro, a 35-year-old sanitary officer. "Our forefathers fought for this since 1955, and now we have achieved it."

He was supervising the clean-up of the field where the ceremony will occur, part of a huge operation to spruce up the city, which has grown from little more than a village to a booming city over the past few years. Small armies of women with brooms and T-shirts that declare "Keep Juba Clean and Green" are trying to defy nature by sweeping dust off the streets that are tarred. The new dancing fountain at one of the city's main roundabouts glows pink, blue, green, yellow, red and white as it rises and falls.

Inside homes, people are installing satellite dishes, so as to be able to watch the celebrations on television, and practising the new national anthem.

"We are singing in the kitchen!" said Margaret Ngaluma, a 40-something office worker. "You could say we are the happiest people in world right now."

Messages of congratulations on billboards and banners and walls across the city reflect that feeling. A multinational beer company offers "a toast to a new nation". The Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA), which was the rebel force during the war, "vow[s] to protect our country". A small political party describes independence as the "most precious diamond extracted" during the struggle for freedom. The South Sudan Islamic Council banner says simply: "Oh God Bless South Sudan."

Given that virtually every family in the south of Sudan was affected by wars that have haunted the region for most of Sudan's post-independence history, the emotion and enthusiasm is unsurprising.

For young people, such as Eunice Aya, 22, whose education was stalled when she had to flee into the bush as a young girl when conflict reached her village, independence brings hope of a second chance. "We'll have freedoms, to speak out, to have education," she said. "I can continue my schooling."

A rebel's story

For people of older generations such as Mamur, the 58-year-old man with the suit, the feeling is more of pride and relief that their sacrifices and struggles have not been in vain.

"I was born in a war, grew up in a war, got old in a war," he said with a wry smile as he sat in his cousin's living room one recent evening.

That was just about true. He was born in Mundri, 116 miles from Juba, in 1953. Conflict erupted almost immediately, even before Sudan gained independence from Britain in 1956. Correctly foreseeing that the Arab-dominated north would seek to oppress, exploit and marginalise the south, where traditional beliefs and Christianity prevailed, southern rebels launched an uprising known as Anyanya I.

Mamur's initial schooling took place under a tree. It did not last long. When he was 10, he heard that his uncle, a teacher, had been arrested by northern forces, paraded in front of his fellow villagers, and then killed during a purge targeting educated southerners.

"Even at that age, something like that builds the anger in you," he said.

So Mamur joined the rebellion, armed with a basic hunting gun and a knife. So did his older brother, who was soon killed in battle. Mamur fought for six years before his father persuaded him to resume his studies in Juba. He had to start again at class one. Orders from the Khartoum government meant that instruction was in Arabic rather than English, a source of much discontent.

"I was 16 by this time – nearly a man!" Mamur said. "At school parade I had to kneel so I was the same height as the other pupils. Seriously!"

By the time he finished secondary school he was 28. It was 1981. The first civil war had been over for nearly a decade but another, even deadlier, conflict was brewing. Two years later, a group of southern soldiers, led by the US-educated colonel John Garang, mutinied and began a new rebellion, Anyanya II, against the northern government, which had continued to exploit the south.

Mamur did not take up arms again, but he strongly supported the cause. Through the church where he had started working, he helped recruit young fighters for Garang's SPLA. It was dangerous, since Juba was a garrison town controlled by the northern forces, as locals here were reminded this week when dozens of old shells and mortar bombs buried by Khartoum's army were removed from the site where the independence celebrations will occur.

After being detained three times by northern soldiers, Mamur escaped to Uganda with his wife in 1990, and then on to Kenya. But he could not stay away from his homeland. In 1994, with the war raging, he returned to southern Sudan to work for an international aid agency, all the while "operating undercover for the [rebel] movement".

A decade on, with the war nearly over, and about two million people dead, most from conflict-related starvation and disease, he returned to Kenya, where his wife and his two daughters were still living. It was there that Bashir and Garang signed the comprehensive peace agreement in January 2005, which provided for a six-year interim period of substantially autonomy for the south, followed by a vote on independence.

Mamur was part of a delegation that flew to Khartoum to attend Garang's inauguration as the country's first vice-president, but he still doubted that the south would ever be allowed to secede.

"We knew that the Arabs [the northern government] never kept their word on anything," he said.

But despite hitches – including Garang's mysterious death in a helicopter crash just months later – the peace deal held and the referendum inched closer. By 2009, Mamur came to the conclusion that independence may in fact happen. So he went to a men's shop in Nairobi and bought his freedom suit.

Last July, he returned to Juba for good, erecting a tent on a plot near his cousin's house as he waited to build a simple thatched hut. His suit came with him.

After staying up all night on Friday, he will put it on and make his way to Garang's mausoleum, where the independence ceremony will occur. When, around midday, the South Sudan flag is raised, he will go home. A goat will be slaughtered, and a feast will ensue. Then he will take off his suit, its purpose served, and go to sleep a happy man.

"Even if I die on Sunday, it will be in a free country," he said. "I will die knowing that my people and children are free at last."

Officials closed remote campgrounds and trails near the scene of Wednesday's attack close to Canyon Village, which sits in the middle of the sprawling park. The identity of the 57-year-old victim was being withheld until his family could be notified, said Yellowstone spokesman Al Nash.

The mauling occurred just after Yellowstone's peak weekend for tourism. While lamenting the death, officials said they didn't want to overemphasize the danger to visitors.

"This is a wild and natural park," said Diane Shober, director of the state Wyoming Travel and Tourism agency. "At the same time, the likelihood of this happening again is small."

It was the park's first fatal grizzly mauling since 1986, but the third in the Yellowstone region in just over a year amid ever-growing numbers of grizzlies and tourists roaming the same wild landscape of scalding-hot geysers and sweeping mountain vistas.

The bear attacked Wednesday morning to defend against a perceived threat, park officials said. The wife of the victim called 911 on her cell phone and other hikers in the area responded to her cries for help.

Nash said the couple saw the bear twice on their hike. The first time, they continued hiking. The second time, the grizzly charged them and the man told his wife to run.

The woman told park officials she didn't see the bear attack her husband. When the bear went for her, Nash said, she dropped to the ground. The grizzly lifted her off the ground by the day pack she was wearing, then dropped her. The woman may have had scrapes and bruises but didn't seek medical attention.

Yellowstone and surrounding areas are home at least 600 grizzlies -- and some say more than 1,000. Once rare to behold, grizzlies have become an almost routine cause of curious tourists lining up at Yellowstone's roadsides at the height of summer season.

Those tourists have been flooding into Yellowstone in record numbers: 3.6 million last year, up 10 percent from 2009's 3.3 million, also a record.

In June 2010, a grizzly just released after being tranquilized for study killed an Illinois man hiking outside Yellowstone's east gate. Last July, a grizzly killed a Michigan man and injured two others in a nighttime campground rampage near Cooke City, Mont., northeast of the park.

Full-grown Yellowstone bears can stand 6 feet tall and top 600 pounds. They have been known to peel off a man's face with a single swipe of their massive, clawed paws.

They are an omnivorous species with a diet of berries, elk, fish, moths, ants and even pine nuts. In 2009, a federal judge restored threatened species protections for Yellowstone grizzlies, citing beetle-caused declines in the numbers of whitebark pine trees in the region. The protections had been lifted in 2007.

Environmentalists have cited the beetle-caused decimation of the whitebark pine as putting grizzlies in greater danger of extinction because some bears rely on whitebark pine nuts. But experts caution that it sometimes can be impossible to determine the cause of bear attacks on humans.

Grizzlies require constant vigilance for tourists and park employees alike, said Caleb Platt, a service station manager at Canyon Village. Platt said he has had a handful of fairly close encounters with grizzlies while hiking in the park.

"When it's close and you realize it does see you, it gets the heart racing," Platt said.

Park officials worked to clear the area near Wednesday's attack of people. A warning sign was posted on the trailhead, Nash said.

"It is in the backcountry of the park, and we have access challenges and limited communication," he said.

Officials also issued recommendations for visitors to stay safe from backcountry bears: Stay on designated trails, hike in groups of three or more, and make noise in places where a grizzly could be lurking. Bear spray -- pressurized hot-pepper residue in a can -- is effective in stopping aggressive bears, they said.

A spokesman for the Wyoming state tourism agency doubted the attack would cause anybody to change their Yellowstone vacation plans.

"What has happened here hasn't happened for a quarter century," Chuck Coon said. "It is very sad, though, and I'm very sorry to hear of it."

Searches on Sina using the Chinese character for “river,” which is what Jiang translates to, were also blocked, the Journal reported.

The USGS said the New Zealand earthquake struck at 7:03 a.m. on Thursday at the epicenter, 131 miles east of Raoul Island, part of the Kermadec archipelago, and was only 30 miles deep.

It also said a tsumani was possible, with eastern coastal areas of the North Island vulnerable, including the country's main city Auckland, arriving just before 9 a.m. local time, Reuters reported.

The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Center issued the tsunami warning, saying it did not yet know whether an actual tsunami had developed, but, if it had, it would hit East Cape in New Zealand within two hours and Auckland within three hours of the quake.

"The tsunami may have been destructive along coastlines of the region near the earthquake epicenter. Authorities in teh region should take appropriate action in response to this possibility," the Center said in a statement.

No damages have been reported so far, but the National Crisis Management Center has been activated and Civil Defense said the fisrt wave to arrive will reach New Zealand at 8:52 a.m. on Thursday.
